The shoe I love to hate

If only. Those must be the two saddest words in the world.

Picture this

A customer glimpses at a brand new item on the shelf. At first, he questions if he truly needs it. He quickly decides he does. The customer doesn’t think about the price and buys the item. Later, he regrets paying for the item because unknown expenses sprouted up, and he does not have money to pay for the costs.

The customer in this picture is me. The item I brought was the Jordan 1 ‘Turbo Green’.

Story-Time

These shoes came out during the NBA All-Star Weekend of 2019. I was super excited to buy them and devise a plan for my purchase.

The Jordan 1 cost $120 plus tax. I could afford it because I had $310 in my account. Also, I was getting paid the next week, so I did not stress out about the money. I knew I could the shoe and pay for food and gas throughout the week.

Friday comes, and I am trying to buy the shoes on Finishline’s website. Unfortunately, their site crashes. I try to buy the Jordan 1 on the Nike SNKRS app, but the sneakers sold out. During this time, I was frustrated because I could not purchase the shoes.

Since I knew I could not get the shoes for retail price, I decide to shop on eBay. I found the Jordan 1sat the cost off $270, and I bought them. Later on that day, I found the shoe for $250 from a local shoe boutique. I asked for my money back from the eBay purchase and went to the nearby shoe store.

Unfortunately, my refund did not come back until Monday, so I pulled from savings to make the purchase. After I bought the shoes, I used the rest of my money for gas to get back home. For the next couple of days, I was begging for food and help.

The shoe reminds me of making dumb financial decisions, so I gave it away to a teen from my church. I told him to be wise with them.

Better next time…

I just advise anyone who makes an impulse buy on shoes to think through it

Steps to be a wiser shoe customer

  • Research the shoes
  • Give a day to think about if you want the shoe
  • Set a limit on how much you want to spend

Learn from my mistake. Be smart!
